After several European markets received it, the US is finally opening its arms to the A8 Sport model. It's the same large sports sedan we know and love, but the name is a little longer - 2016 Audi A8 L 4.0T Sport - meaning that it's only available with a long wheelbase.
The model achieves 450 hp through an enhanced 4.0T twin-turbo V8, Audi says. Of course, it's just the new engine used by the S6 and S7 watered-down performance models. The +15hp isn't bad, but it's not something to shout out to your neighbors. The quattro all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic are also shared.
The cosmetic package is a mix of S line bits and options. As standard, the car rides on a 20-inch set of five-double spoke alloy wheels with all-season tires. However, customers can also fit 21-inch rims with summer tires. The muscular front bumper is a nice touch, capable of convincing the uninitiated that this is an S8.
Taking a look inside the A8 L 4.0T Sport, we find the Executive and Luxury packages are fitted as standard. This means you have Valcona leather seats with a diamond pattern in the middle and 22-way adjustability.
The front seats also include ventilation and massage functions. Also standard is an Alcantara headliner, panoramic sunroof and acoustic glazing on the windows creating an interior experience that is more luxurious than ever.
Available right now, the 450 horsepower A8 L costs $90,500 plus $925 for the destination charge. Is it expensive? It depends on how you look at it. The standard A8 L is only $9,000 cheaper with a 3-liter TFSI or $5,700 cheaper with the 3-liter TDI.
The all-new 2016 Lexus GS F is a little cheaper at $85,380. It packs a non-turbocharged 5-liter V8 pumping out 467 horsepower to the rear wheels. Because it looks so angry, we could argue that the Japanese car has more curb appeal.
Another reason not to buy a big Audi comes from Cadillac. With a supercharged 640-hp 6.2-liter V-8 from the Z06 Corvette, the CTS-V is our kind of car. But hey, some people really love their quattro.
