Audi’s future diesel-electric supercar will be developed under the Scorpion codename. Based on the Le Mans-winning R18 e-tron quattro, the Scorpion will be designed to rival the likes of LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918.
According to Car & Driver, the car’s design is still subjected to debate with current proposals including a retro-styled design and an R18-based study. The Ingolstadt-developed supercar is expected to share a carbon fiber chassis with the R18 and will gain several weight-saving aluminum components.
The Scorpion and the R18 race car will share the 3.7-liter V6 diesel engine and front-mounted hybrind motor combo as well with the total output rumored to exceed 700 horsepower. “It wouldn’t make sense to use anything but the R18’s racing engine in the Scorpion,” said an anonymous source at Audi.
The German superhybrid will cost more than $1 million and won’t be delivered until 2016 or 2017. Production is likely to be limited to only 333 units.
