Last-mile transportation solutions are a dime a dozen these days, thanks in part to the high number of companies that provide ride-sharing services. But this doesn’t stop others from coming up with their own products meant for this segment.
Now caught in a world-wide offensive to promote the line of electric vehicles that bears the e-tron name, Audi announced on Monday (August 5) it is working on the e-tron Scooter. The gizmo is meant for “sporty riders” who are on the move in the city and is described as a mix between a conventional scooter and a skateboard,

Packing a battery in the steering handle, the scooter has a range of 20 km (12.5 miles) and can move at speeds of up to 20 kph (12.5 mph). The battery can be charged in a variety of ways, including by using a dedicated socket fitted inside the car’s trunk.

The scooter has been designed to be easy to carry when not in use. Owners will have the option of transporting the 12 kg (26 pounds) machine by whatever means they choose, including by pulling it like a trolley.

The e-tron uses a single handlebar that allows only one-hand operation, a feature that makes it look not unlike a skateboard.

“With the Audi e-tron Scooter, we appeal to customers who are on the move in cities, sustainably and multi-modally – and for whom style and functionality are important,”
said in a statement Thorsten Schrader, project manager for micro-mobility at Audi.

“Of course the e-tron Scooter also moves straight ahead. But the feeling of flow only comes when you start carving on asphalt – and that is surprisingly easy with our new concept.”

The German carmaker plans to kick off production of the e-tron scooter in 2020. For the majority of customers, it will sell for around €2,000 ($2,200), but for people who buy an e-tron car, the scooter will be offered for free.
