Artemis may have been just the name of NASA’s new Moon exploration program until now but, as of this week, it is also the moniker used for a new car development project at Audi.
The announcement was made by the carmaker’s new CEO, Markus Duesmann, who said Artemis would become operational on June 1, 2020, and will seek out to create new cars for both Audi and the Volkswagen group. Fast.

The project’s first product, a brand new Audi electric car, is to be launched no later than 2024, and will also incorporate some type of autonomous technology. The car is to serve as a blueprint for other models to be launched across the group.

In charge of Artemis is Alex Hitzinger, currently’s Volkswagen head of autonomous driving and the ID. BUZZ. Hitzinger has been employed at Toyota Motorsport, Ford/Cosworth, and Red Bull Technology over the years. He is one of the men responsible for Porsche’s successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the Endurance World Championship between 2015 to 2017.

The Artemis team he will be leading is not a localized one, and work on the new project will be conducted from across the world. No actual details on the first Artemis vehicle were provided, but we do know this is a separate endeavor to the 75 electrified vehicles push the VW group plans to complete by the end of the decade.

“The project team will be given a large degree of freedom and will work globally, from the high-tech hub of the INCampus in Ingolstadt to the west coast of the United States,” said in a statement the company’s CEO Markus Duesmann.

“Its first task is to create a highly efficient electric car that is scheduled to be on the road as early as 2024. The creative team will also develop an extensive ecosystem around the car, thus designing a new business model for the entire usage phase.”
