An event less automotive in nature took place on Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), where German automaker Audi announced its participation in the 2011 Charleston Bermuda Race.
Aided by comedian Stephen Colbert, Audi America's Johan de Nysschen announced the formation of the team that will sail from South Carolina and embark on a journey that will take it 777 miles south, to the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
Colbert's presence during the announcement was more than a coincidence, the comedian being chosen by Audi as the Morale Officer of the crew that will sail aboard the 65-foot ocean-racing yacht called “The Audi” on May 21. This would be the comedian's second start in the race and the first time he has been named Honorary Captain of the Fleet.
“If you're going to win a race, you want to be in an Audi,” Colbert said in his own way about the involvement in the race. “I tried bolting a mast and sail to an S5 cabriolet and took her for spin on the harbor, and the results were, well...moist! So I decided if I couldn’t sail an Audi, I would ask them to sponsor my boat.”
“Audi’s support in this race is the next best thing to putting a sail on my own Audi and sailing to victory. The Audi’ is a shoe-in to win!”
The Charleston Bermuda Race, one of the most challenging in the international circuit, will kick off on May 21 from Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, and will end in Bermuda.
