Audi Shares Its 2008 Profits

Not all news are bad in the dark and bleak economy of 2008-2009. In fact, for some the crisis remains just a far away rumor, whispers of a bitter struggle on the automotive front. It is the case of German manufacturer Audi, who, after registering record profits in 2008, decided to share the success with the people that made it possible: its employees.

As a result, the company will share with the roughly 43,000 wage-scale employees at its German plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm a total of 230 million euros. For short, each of the workers in question will receive around 5,300 euros for the work they done last year.

“An attractive employer translates the success of the company into success for its employees. Especially in times like these, the dedicated work of each individual employee contributes to the success of the company and helps secure jobs,” Werner Widuckel, Audi Ag member of the board said.

The expanded employee profit-sharing program (eMEB), defined in April 2005, will be paid out for the fourth time this year in addition to employee profit-sharing (MEB) that has been previously been paid. MEB is composed of the base amount, a bonus scaled according to seniority, and a variable share of profits. In July an average of €1,700 per employee will be paid out.

Audi's performance in 2008 does not only mean extra bonuses for its employees. Some 300 new people will be hired in 2009, mainly to work in the Technical Development and in the Production departments.

Audi sold a total of 1,003,469 cars in 2008, which represents an increase of 4.1 percent over the previous year, and by doing so achieving its thirteenth consecutive record year. Even if 2009 appears to be somewhat more difficult than 2008, “the terrific effort of the team," as Peter Mosch, Audi General Works calls it, makes the company see the future in a different color than other manufacturers do.
