Audi Sets New Sales Record in 2008

While other automakers struggle to remain in business and beg for government money, German company Audi reports a new sales record and an impressive increase for worldwide unit sales. According to figures given by the German carmaker, Audi sold no less than 1,003,400 cars worldwide, which represents an increase of 4.1 percent over the previous year when “only” 964,151 units were delivered.

In addition, sales also grew up in December by 17.4 percent to around 82,800 units, compared to the same month of the previous year when Audi sold 70,523 cars. This happened especially thanks to the newly-released Audi Q5 and Audi A4, representatives of the carmaker said.

“This 13th record year in a row is a success achieved by the entire Audi team. I would like to express the gratitude of the Board of Management for your wholehearted commitment,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “We’ll continue to draw on this strength in the difficult year of 2009. We have ambitious long-term goals: We want to make Audi the most attractive premium brand worldwide.”

However, despite all these good results, the United States market brought a 6.1 percent drop to Audi, with only 87,760 cars sold in 2008 (93,506 units delivered in 2007). Moreover, sales followed the same negative line in December when the company delivered 7,712 cars, 9.3 percent fewer than in the same month of the previous year.

And Audi promises to continue its record sales per year streak in 2009, as the company plans to bring us a bunch of new models expected to attract very high sales in certain markets.

“We will keep up our model initiative as planned: In 2009 we’ll continue to offer our customers a succession of new models,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales of AUDI AG.
