It's been many years since the process burst onto the scene, but peelable paint is still very popular. However, there's a clear separation between what the amateurs can do and what pros offer.
If a guy like me wants a stealth look that's completely reversible, he might spray his wheels and badges in matte black. It's easy, and the surfaces are so intricate, you won't notice the flaws that much. However, Fonzie and his team at DipYourCar offer a finish that shouldn't be approached with a DIY attitude.
When people want to go stealth, they usually do it with matte black. But it's been so over-done that some say it's ugly. Because the owner of this white Audi S8 was dead-set on a sinister look, Fonzie proposed Steel Blue Pearl.
It's sort of a metallic color that could easily pass as something done in Germany by Audi themselves. But it still has a unique look to it, somewhere between slate gray and navy blue.
So to start things off, the DYC team puts down the first of six black layers, one done in a light 50% coverage. After that is dry, they apply wet coats for a smoother finish. After that comes the Steel Blue Pearl.
They mixed 100 grams in total with 1 gallon of DYC Top Coat and 1 gallon clear PDS. It's not that expensive, as the pearl will only set you back $40. So if you have a painted that will do mate's rates, definitely consider peelable paint.
Remember, it pays to prepare. Even though masking off is tedious and boring, every minute doing it is time you don't have to spend removing excess material.
The S8 is a decent-looking Audi. This one is pre-facelift, so it was made in 2012 or 2013. It's got the 520 horsepower version of the twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with quattro and the 8-speed Tiptronic auto. It will do 0 to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, s be careful. No amount of stealth paint will hide you from the police.
