This little beast is what famed Swedish racing driver and two-time DTM champ Mattias Ekstrom will be fielding this year in the World Rallycross Championship. The Audi S1 EKS RX Concept looks like just what they need to make Rallycross really cool again and is sure to bring the crowds.
The car is supposed to be an Audi S1, but we see it as more of an A1 quattro because of the white paint, the shape of the grille and the pre-facelift hadlights. It could just be that the racing team weren't able to get the brand new S1 and modify it in time for the Rallycross season's start.
Regardless of what we call it, power comes from a highly tuned 2-liter turbo engine which is capable of delivering 600 horsepower, just like Ken Block's Fiesta S2000.
Powering all four wheels, the highly modified Audi pocket rocket is supposed to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.9 seconds. Of course, this is standard performance in Rallycross nowadays, and Ekstrom will face stiff competition from the Citroen DS3, Ford Fiesta ST, and the Pugeot 208. Star drivers for this year's championship include Tanner Foust, Ken Block, Jacques Villeneuve, and Petter Solberg.
Team EKS is hoping the S1 will be ready to race in a few days. Its debut will take place in Portugal at the inaugural race starting May 3rd.
This year our plans are to complete as much research and development of the car that we can for the future. Our goal is of course to build the best car. I grew up in the rallycross paddock because of my father and I’m very excited about driving a Supercar this year and to witness the sport growing as a World Championship," Ekstrom said at the official World RX media day in Italy.
Audi's quattro badge has been associated with the word of rallying for as long as we can remember. It's nice to see that the S1 putting its legendary name to good use, even if Team EKS doesn't have Audi's official backing.
