The S1 is like an afterthought in the lineup, a car that Audi probably didn't envision in the first place. But only a few months after the launch, this little pocket rocket has a cult following with the sort of people who go to the Worthersee every year. And it's precisely those types of people who we think will like this story.

Italian exhaust special Supersprint were recently commissioned to make a custom exhaust system to more aggressively channel the note of the 2-liter turbo engine. However, before doing that, they did a thorough inspection, taking photos that really caught our attention by the lapels.

Supersprint say the engine is identical to that of the Golf GTI Performance, but puts down even more power than Audi claims. They dynoed it and got 237 PS instead of 231 PS. The Italians also took the first photos we've seen of the beast's underbelly. Why is this significant? Because Audi crammed a Haldex all-wheel drive system at the back, changed the pat of the exhaust from the left of the car to the middle and fixed the independent rear suspension system (it's new) to the AWD box.

Another thing that's interesting is that the fuel tank had to be split into two pieces to make room for the drive shaft an exhaust. This in turn required heat shielding to be added. No wonder this 4-meter car weighs more 1.4 tons!

Fitting a new exhaust wasn't all that difficult for Supersprint. The central muffler is the same as that for the GTI. On both sides of that, they added a pair of 100x75mm oval tips, which should channel more sound than the stock Audi setup. Speaking of stock, Audi's own system was fitted with a valve control system that freed up the flow, but only on the left side.
