One of German manufacturer's core operations, the engine plant in Gyor, Hungary, is celebrating a very important achievement this week. Eighteen years after the facility began manufacturing engines for the four rings brand, the 20 millionth unit rolled off the assembly lines, in the form of a 2.0l, four-cylinder common rail diesel.
The Gyor facility currently employs 3,950 people, who work on manufacturing a staggering 270 engine variants. The Gyor plant is responsible of the powerplants that go into most Audi models, from four-cylinder to 12 cylinder units and with outputs ranging from 75 hp to 419 570 hp. In the case of the anniversary engine, it is meant for fitting into an Audi TT Coupe, which is also assembled in Hungary.
“The 20 millionth engine is a symbol for 18 years of successful engine production by Audi Hungaria. Nearly all the engines installed in Audi models come from Gyor,” said Frank Dreves, Audi member of the board for Production.
“Audi Hungaria therefore has a special strategic significance within the Audi Group. This company plays a major role in our long-term growth strategy.”
In September last year, Audi announced a major expansion of its operations in Hungary. The car maker plans to invest EUR900 million ($1.2 billion) by 2013, for the creation of a facility which will be in charge with manufacturing the body shells for the Audi models assembled locally.
Gyor is slotted to produce 125,000 cars per year starting 2013, including the Audi TT Coupe, the TT Roadster, the A3 Cabriolet and an A3 derivative. The new facility to be built there is likely to create another 15,000 direct and indirect jobs.
