Forget about all the hybrid, fuel cell and extended range electric vehicles that Audi is bringing under the spotlight these days! What is a pure Ingolstadt machine stand for? For some of us automotive enthusiasts, it stands for machines like the Ur Quattro, and for five-cylinder turbocharged engines coupled to four-wheel drive systems.
This is why we were glad to hear that the German carmaker’s 2.5-liter TFSI was named the “International Engine of the Year 2011” in the 2-liter to 2.5-liter category, keeping the crown it won last year.
The five-cylinder unit is fitted to sporty models like the RS3 Sportback and the TT RS, combining turbocharging with FSI direct injection technology. With a displacement of 2,480cc, this engine produces 250 kW (340 hp) between 5,400 and 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) from 1,600 to 5,300 rpm.
“This is certainly the best turbocharged engine in recent years. Torque, power, and great sound – this engine has it all! It is a powerful, visceral reminder of the original quattro rally racing engine that put Audi on the map,” International Engine of the Year jury members said of the 2.5-liter engine.
When under the bonnet of the TT RS Coupe, the five-pot helps the junior sportscar spring from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds, while the roadster does the standard sprint just a second faster. Both the Coupe and Roadster have an optional top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).
The most recent car bearing the four-ring badge to sport the 2.5-liter TFSI engine is the RS3 Sportback. It takes 4.6 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) – a best-in-class performance figure - while its governed top speed is 250 km/h (155 mph).
