Audi RS4 Beats Brand new C63 AMG Estate in Track Battle

So much for progress ladies and gentleman. The brand new Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate has been beaten around a track by the grandfather of the segment, the Audi RS4. So much for progress.

Auto Express' recently appointed test driver Steve Sutcliffe organized a race between the brand new C63 Estate, which is packed with all the latest gadgets from the AMG division, and the old Audi RS4. This quattro car is such an old time that it will probably go out of production in a few months, and yet it can still show the young guns in town how it's done.

How is that possible? Well, even though Mercedes wants us to believe the new C-Class is much lighter than its predecessor, that's not necessarily the case. Even though the V8 engine has gone down in displacement from 6.2 liters to just 4, it's a heavy machine.

The model seen in this video tips the scales at 1,785 kg or 3935 lbs. If we compare it to the old W204 C63 Estate, we find that only 10 kilos have been lost (22 lbs). Everybody thinks the RS4 is an outdated car because it's heavy, but with 1,795 kg (3957 lbs) it could even be called light since it has the all-wheel drive goodies that the Merc lacks.

On a wet track, the rear axle of the C63 Estate struggles to use the 220 extra Newton Meters of torque available. The stopwatch says there's a 1.2-second difference between these seriously rapid estates.

We do agree with Steve's assessment that the C63 AMG is the car you want, especially when you consider there's a 510 PS version on sale, whereas the RS4 can only ever muster 450 PS. The price is almost the same at around €78,000 while the Merc has a much newer interior and better styling. But if Mercedes had added 4Matic like they did with the E63, their super-wagon would have been usable more of the time.
