Audi has just revealed the Q2 premium subcompact crossover, a "come at me, bro" sent to MINI's email inbox. The haters are going to hate it, but we find that it has everything it needs to become very popular, including bold styling and the right badge for an SUV.
As a reply, MINI is currently cooking two new JCW cars, based on the Clubman and the upcoming Countryman. Depending on who you ask, they'll either have a 3-liter turbo or a 2-liter one. We're more inclined towards the latter, as an inline-6 would be a major headache for the engineers to stuff into such a little vehicle.
We've been hearing rumors about an RS Q2 model for at least a year. Audi poured gasoline on the fire by confirming more performance SUVs would be launched by 2018, including the SQ5 and the SQ7 we saw this morning. If they decide to give the RS Q3 a baby brother, it will have access to the best family upbringing possible, as the Q2 is based on the same MQB platform as the Golf R.
That means the 300 horsepower 2.0 TSI/TFSI turbo could easily be copy-pasted under the hood, considering the Q2 already has quattro and is available with a de-tuned 2-liter engine. And it's not like the engine is restricted to that output either, as the TTS has 310 ponies since 2014.
But we digress; what we need to talk about is this cute rendering of the RS Q2 made by X-Tomi Design. The Q2 didn't have that much ground clearance to begin with, so now that it's been lowered, it resembles a regular hatchback. Having said that, it's going to be a lot faster and more practical than the S1 supermini, so we say: build it.
To make an RS crossover, X-Tomi lowered the car, added wheels from the RS Q3 performance and tweaked the front end design with spoilers and skirts. Would you buy one for around €40,000? You won't, but the people who value the RS brand will jump at the chance to own the cheapest model.
