Audi Reveals A6 Avant Plug-In Hybrid with Up to 123 MPG Fuel Economy

The race to bring fleet-wide emission levels to more compliant levels continues at Audi with the introduction of the plug-in hybrid variant of the A6 Avant. The announcement comes several months after the launch of the PHEV variant of the sedan A6, and the two cars share, of course, the drivetrain same system.

The official name of the new PHEV is Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro, the same as in the case of the sedan variant, minus the Avant moniker. The powertrain on the other hand is exactly the same in both cars.

To create the PHEV system Audi mated a 2.0-liter TFSI engine to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, creating a monster capable of generating 367 ps and a maximum torque of 500 Nm. The internal combustion engine, linked to a seven-speed S tronic transmission, chips in 252 ps and 370 Nm of torque of the total.

Thanks to the battery and electric motor, the car can cruise along using just electricity at speeds of up to 135 kph (84 mph) and for distances of up to 51 km (32 miles) – the electric range is just a rad smaller than on the sedan variant. Thanks to this, fuel consumption has bee rated at 2.1 liters/100 km, or about 123 miles per gallon.

The performance numbers show the Avant is just slightly less impressive than the sedan, with a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time rated at 5.7 seconds (5.6 on the sedan). The top speed for both cars is electronically limited to 250 kph (155 mph).

Just like its older sibling, the Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro comes equipped with the S line exterior package, virtual cockpit, Matrix LED headlights, sport suspension, and sport seats.

Sales for the new Audi plug-in hybrid are about to start. In the home market of Germany, the car has a starting price of €71,940 (more than the €68,850 starting price of the sedan).
