Audi Ready to Sail

Having enjoyed a moderate degree of success last year in the Audi MedCup (ranking seventh place overall), the Germans from Audi decided they have had so much fun, that they would give it another go this year.

From now and until 2013, Audi will borrow its name to the Franco-German team with which it sailed last year, entering both the MedCup and the TP52 World Championship. And this time, Audi plans to score, setting its sights on the top spots in both competitions.

“It was a logical step for us to extend our commitment to the Kieler Woche and to make an even more prominent appearance in the future,” said Bastian Kaltofen, Audi head of Trade Fairs, Events and Sport Marketing.

With the bigger goals set for this season, Audi would have to invest some serious money into the team. And it plans to do so, too. The car maker will supply the team with a new boat to use in the TP52 class, whose construction is underway in Sydney.

In May, when the assembly of the boat will be completed, it will be baptised during the first sailing practice session. The team who will be tacking on the challenge is currently made up of two people, helmsman Jochen Schumann, and tacticiaqn Sebastien Col.

Being a car maker by trade, Audi will make full use of the exposure insured by the sport and advertise its vehicles as many times as it can. Its entire sailing endeavor already calls for the deployment of some 50 cars to different sailing partners.
