Audi R8 GT, 1 Of 333, Makes For an Awesome Nurburgring Taxi

The Audi R8 might seem like a "normal" supercar nowadays, but that's only because we're talking about the second generation of the mid-engine machine. However, when Ingolstadt started showroom-experimenting with supercars one decade ago, the R8 came as a shock.

And when the German automaker crowned its "exotic" effort with the R8 GT back in 2010, things went really crazy. No longer would the two-seater Audi sit in the shadow of its Lamborghini sibling. Oh no. The GT could battle the Gallardo on any given occasion.

That didn't bring any cannibalization issues, though, with one of the reasons being that Audi only built 333 units of the thing.

Well, one of those cars went on to become a Nurburgring Taxi. Bascially, this is the opposite of a garage queen. Sure, some of you hardcore Green Hell fans might have come across the fixed wing beast before, but we hadn't and we're pretty sure there are tons of aficionados out there who shared our lack of Audi R8 GT Ring Taxi knowledge.

With its 5.2-liter V10 pushed to 560 ponies and having been on a 220 lbs (100 kg) diet, this velocity animal can complete the 0 to 62 mph sprint in 3.6 seconds and offers a top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h). And we're talking about a 7:34 minutes car.

All those numbers sound cool, but how much does it cost to experience their real-world equivalent on the Ring? The pricing kicks off at EUR250 ($280 at the current exchange rates) per lap and things obviously become more convenient as the number of laps increases - we can't help but feel the faint-stomached are disadvantaged here.

The first clip below, which brings us footage from yesterday's Touristenfahrten (Tourist Days) session, starts with the R8 GT Ring Taxi flying through Adenauer Forst. However, since checking out the passenger seat view is the idea here, we've added a second clip (from back in the summer) that brings such a take on the matter.
