Can less really be more when it comes to cars? A few hours have passed since we first saw the revamped Audi R8, and while the cosmetic makeover is everything we hoped it would the fact that they didn’t upgrade the engine is frankly very disappointing.
The base R8 still comes with the same 4.2-liter V8, which puts out 424hp (430PS) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft). The price for one of these in coupe form is €113,500 including tax in Germany. That’s about the same as a 911 Carrera 4S (only 997 available), which costs about €8,000 less. Meanwhile, the V8 Spyder convertible is slightly more expensive at €124,800 in Germany
The 911 Turbo rivaling R8 V10 get the same new front end as the regular V8. It’s engine is also unchanged 518hp (525PS) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft). Prices for the coupe start at €154,600, while the Spyder is €165,900. Both are about €4,000 more expensive than the equivalent 911 Turbo.
Porsche also sells a more impressive version called the R8 V10 Plus. This flagship model comes with 550 PS and 540Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm, and can be yours for €173,200.
US sales of the facelifted R8 will start in 2013, so we’ll have to wait to find out what it costs in dollars.
