The Audi R18 e-tron quattro proved that it was the fastest car around the LeMans circuit, just ahead of the Toyota TS030s. Both cars are hybrid-powered and equally interesting, but the Audi takes the crown, partly because of its slight technological edge, and partly because of the dedication of driver Tom Kristensen.
The linked video shows just how much concentration and how much work goes into a 3-minute lap around the famed French track. The driver encounters heavy traffic, but no nasty surprises await and the lap is completed in a rather clean manner, with Tom doing a slalom amidst the slower drivers.
Also, the 3.7-liter V6 diesel engine sounds amazing in the on-board footage - very little like a diesel and very much like a petrol engine.
We hope this improved engine noise for diesels makes its way into more run-of-the-mill diesels in passenger cars, as apart from a few sporty diesels, all compression-ignition engines still sound rather agricultural - especially four-cylinders and less.
