Audi Q8 Will Rival Range Rover Sport

We've all head storied about how Audi wants to fill every possible SUV and crossover niche from Q1 to Q8. Frankly, that makes a lot of sense, since these vehicles are increasing in popularity every day, but we never quite understood what the Q8 is for. It's not like the Q7 needs to be bigger.

At the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, Audi's development boss Wolfgang Dürheimer shed light upon the subject. According to an Autocar report, the Q8 will be a rival for the Range Rover Sport.

According to them, it could be marketed as a high-riding version of the A8 and would ride on the MLB platform which will go into the next Cayenne, Toureg and maybe even the Lamborghini Urus.

"We can go bigger than we have with the Q7, and we can all see that this sector is growing," said Dürheimer. "Audi has the biggest SUV in the group, and I don't see any reason to change that."

Not much else is known at the moment, but if we were to speculate about the Q8's drivetrain, we'd say the biggest engine would be the 4.0-liter twin-turn that went into everything from the Bentley GT V8 to the RS7 Sportback. That has more than enough power to take on Range Rover's best supercharged V8.

Editor's note: If they go any bigger, Audi will start making MAN trucks.
