At times incohesive, the Audi lineup is slowly but surely finding its mojo. One of the most heavily anticipated models that will see the light of day in the near future is a compact-sized crossover with coupe styling cues based on the TT, which may be called Q4.
Previewed by the Audi TT Offroad Concept from the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, the production version was previously understood to take the TTQ nameplate. That was the case before the Volkswagen Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have settled their quarreling over the Q2 and Q4 trademarks.
The Q2, as we all know by now, is a subcompact crossover that oozes with premium credentials. The Q4 handle, however, has yet to materialize into a production model. But based on the fact Audi is the owner of the mark since August 2016, it shouldn’t be long until the TT-based crossover comes along.
Searching through the database of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, it has come to autoevolution's attention that Audi also owns the S Q4 trademark since 2013. Plainly put, a performance-oriented variant may be in the offing as well. And on that bombshell, the coupe-like crossover gets a little more interesting than what our common sense leads us to believe.
According to a recently published report from Auto Express that fuels the rumor mill regarding what the future holds, the manufacturer's "fresh application came barely 24 hours before Korean technology giant Samsung SDI confirmed that it will invest 400 billion won (£273M) in a new battery factory in Hungary. The facility is scheduled to open in the second half of 2018 and will be able to produce enough batteries for 50,000 EVs per year.”
The battery plant the British publication is talking about is uncannily close to the production facility where the Audi TT is made. More to the point, Autoexpress suggests that an Audi Q4 e-tron could turn to fruition. The question is, will it be pure electric or a plug-in hybrid vehicle? Well, nobody can say for sure at the time of writing this story, nobody except for Audi.
Considering that the jaw-dropping Audi TT Offroad Concept is based on the VW Group MQB platform, and because it prides itself on an electrically driven rear axle, chances are a variant of the Q4 will be plug-in hybrid. Because the 2018 Audi Q3 is expected to debut in late 2017, the Audi Q4 is highly likely to make its first public outing in late 2018 for the model year 2019.
