Audi Q3 Plant Breaks Ground

Spanish manufacturer Seat has today set the corner stone for the future bodywork workshop at the Martoreli plant, where the new Audi Q3 will be built starting 2011. Seat takes great pride in the future plant which will be, thanks to its 300 robots, "the most modern workshop of its kind in the world."

These facilities represent the biggest investment (300 million euros) ever made in SEAT over the past fifteen years. At these Martoreli facilities we shall be producing the Q3 for Audi with Premium quality. That is good news for the Spanish automobile industry and especially for Catalonia,” Erich Schmitt, Seat president said at the event.

Two months ago, the Volkswagen Group awarded Seat with the production of the Q3 model. To assemble it, the facility will have to employ some 1,500 people. The facility stretches on a 30,000 square meters surface and will be equipped with skylights which will provide an electricity consumption reduction of some 200 megawatts a year.

"We are counting on this Spanish site’s efficiency, the excellent quality of the Production department, and its highly trained staff. We will use the Group’s synergies to sharpen our competitive edge and help protect around 1,200 jobs. The decision furthermore safeguards workplaces at other Audi locations," Rupert Stadler, Audi board member motivated the decision made by Volkswagen to build the Q3 in Spain.

The facility will produce around 80,000 cars per year, with the German manufacturer ready to invest approximately 300 million euros for the production of the Q3.

As for the Q3 itself, little is known at this point. Rumors say the car will come in a choice of several engine configurations, starting with a 2.0l unit and ending with 3.6l V6.
