Audi Q2, the smallest crossover in the Ingolstadt brand’s future range, is getting ready for its debut.
The Q2 is actually the production name of the already confirmed Q1 and will become the smallest model in Audi’s Q range. Initially, the car went by the name of Q1, but a trademark dispute with Alfa Romeo made the Germans at Audi call their new car the Q2. No big deal in the long run, but a bit confusing in the short term for those who were expecting the launch of a car called the Q1.

As you can see in the attached spyshots, the Q2 seems to be really close to its production body. The vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB modular platform. This means that it is skipping the PQ25 architecture of the current A1 and taking on the future platform of this hatchback.

Ultimately, the future A1/S1 and other eventual derivatives will use the MQB platform as well. This technical solution allows the Volkswagen Group to save big bucks on developing platform variations for different body styles and supplement their savings in production, which is also done on the same line in the factory for several brands that share components. This idea is shared by several carmakers in different variations.

For now, we don’t know if Audi intended to eventually launch a Q2 along with the Q1, although some rumors announced this a few years back.

If we look at the Q2’s big brothers, the Q3, Q5, and Q7, we’ll notice the announcement of a future Q6. In this case, Audi might have a small naming issue with the car that was supposed to become the Q2, based on the Q1.

Unlike BMW, Audi’s future Q6 might not be just a different body style of the Q7 platform, like the X6 is to the X5. That’s because Audi is planning on developing an electric SUV called the Q6. The Q range is also expecting a future Q8, set to become Audi’s flagship SUV.
