Audi has started the manufacturing process for the all-new Q2, and the German automaker has chosen its central facility for this project.
We are writing about Audi’s factory in Ingolstadt, the largest production facility in the Audi Group. The same factory is also the second-largest car plant in Europe, according to Audi.
The automaker builds over half a million vehicles a year in Ingolstadt, and a new unit exists the assembly line every 30 seconds, accounting for over 2,500 cars a day.
Showcased at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the Audi Q2 represents the 13th model series of the German automaker. The Q2 is also the smallest SUV in Audi’s offering, and is meant to continue the success story of the Q-family from Ingolstadt.
The factory will gradually increase production of the Q2 model to around 450 units a day. Audi has explained that it has updated its facility to suit the introduction of its smallest SUV by installing a fully automated module store for the drivetrain.
Thanks to this improvement, Audi’s central facility will have a larger local storage capacity. Audi builds the Q2 on the same production line as the A3, and the two models also meet in the body shop, paint shop, and assembly line. Unlike the Q2, the A3 is also made in Audi’s factory in Hungary.
The new Audi Q2 will be available at launch with six engine options. Customers will choose from three TFSI units and three TDI engines, which will provide between 116 HP and 190 HP. Audi has announced that it will soon open ordering books for the new Q2. Until that time, the German automaker will not publish fuel economy figures for the new Audi Q2, as it awaits homologation procedures.
Without officially confirming the model, Audi is working on a performance version of its smallest SUV. It will be called SQ2, and engineers are already testing it on public roads. Expect to see the SQ2 in 2017.
