Again, this is not the sort of rumor to be taken at face value, it’s more the “I’ll believe it when I see it” type, but it’s also too interesting to resist. Audi has, according to some rumors, given up on putting the R8 e-tron into production, which makes sense if you look at the electric SLS AMG, which makes almost twice as much power.
Instead, Audi will, according to AutoCar, try to offer a diesel version of the R8. Everybody knows that they did build the R8 V12 TDI and showed it with production intentions at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. But since then, they pulled the plug on the 493 hp oddity.
Audi has the most amazing diesel hybrid AWD system ever in the R18 e-tron, which won Le Mans this year. They also have reason to put it into production, since Porsche also has a technological showcase coming that will make even the R8 look like a toy.
This diesel-hybrid super will reportedly feature a carbon monocoque chassis and will probably be called the R10, according to AutoCar. Again, this rumor makes little sense right now, since Audi has to first finish work on the next R8 platform first.
