In the early 1990s, as Hungary was transitioning from communism to democracy, the free market opened the gates to foreign investment. Audi was one of the first automakers to bet on the Central European country, opening an engine plant in 1993. In 1998, Audi Hungaria Zrt. started production of the TT sports car.
From there on, the German automaker’s Hungarian facility in Gyor manufactured in excess of one million vehicles. Since 2013, 500,000 cars were built, the 500,000th coming in the form of the pictured TT S. Painted in Viper Green, the anniversary TT S is a UK-spec right-hand drive example.

Is should be noted that Audi Hungaria Zrt. is a full-fledged car-making plant since 2013. From 1998 to 2013, the body shell of the TT was produced in Ingolstadt, with Gyor taking care of the powertrain and final assembly. Accounting pre-2013 production, the total figure isn’t 500,000, but the aforementioned 1,000,000+ vehicles. Two reasons to celebrate, then.

From the regular TT to the TT RS, the workers at Audi Hungaria Zrt. also manufacture the A3/S3/RS3 Sedan and A3/S3 Cabriolet in Gyor. Almost 12,000 people make sure the assembly line keeps churning out premium cars, which is plenty considering that the city of Gyor has a population of 129,568.

“We will expand our product portfolio next year with the premium compact SUV Audi Q3,” said Arnd-Robert Sponagel, board member for car production at Audi Hungaria. “It will be followed one year later by the new Audi Q4 as another model that is completely manufactured in Gyor. With this model, Audi is entering the Compact Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment,” Sponagel concluded.

The 2018 Audi Q3 is almost ready for production based on the latest spy shots, but the 2019 Audi Q4 has yet to be snapped by the carparazzi. Officially confirmed for production by Audi earlier this year, the upcoming Q4 is certain to be offered in S Q4 attire thanks to a trademark filing from 2016.
