Audi Mexico Plant Gets Ready For 2017 Audi Q5 Production

Not that long ago, German manufacturer Audi confirmed that the Q5 will switch production from Ingolstadt, Germany, to San Jose Chiapa, Mexico. There, the second generation of the compact SUV will be exclusively produced for the world market.

Audi promises that its Mexico plant will create 4,200 jobs. The site is capable of making approximately 150,000 vehicles per year. By comparison, the Ingolstadt plant produced a little over a million Q5s from 2008 to 2016.

“The plant in Mexico is a milestone in the history of our company and an important step in our internationalization. It is one of the most modern factories on the American continent. With this facility, we have established an important site for the export of our automobiles to customers all over the world,” explains Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management.

The state-of-the-art facility in Mexico was completed in three and a half years. The plant currently consists of a press shop, body shop, paint shop, and the obligatory assembly line. Right next to the plant, Audi inaugurated a park comprised of seven suppliers and logistics providers. Something like three-thirds of the parts that go into the second-gen Audi Q5 are sourced from the NAFTA region. Furthermore, more than 100 companies supply Audi Mexico's San Jose Chiapa production facility with parts for the all-new Q5.

Even though the first-gen Q5 continues to be produced in China and India for the local markets, the second generation of the compact SUV made its official debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Thanks to modern styling, 5-link independent suspension, and as much as 286 PS from the 3.0 TDI of the SQ5, the all-new Q5 ticks all the right boxes. It’s also marginally lighter than the old model, partly thanks to the Volkswagen Group’s MLB 2 platform. In other words, the Q5 shares many of its underpinnings with the current-gen A4.

A bit later on, the Audi Q5 will gain an RS Q5 variant. In this flavor, the SUV will pack the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Porsche Panamera 4S. The mill will also find its way under the hood of the next-generation RS4 Avant.
