Audi’s latest concept car is called the h-tron quattro and features a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The technical study showcases the four-ringed brand’s latest developments in the world of electric cars that turn hydrogen into electric power.
The concept car is based on the current generation of the MLB Evo platform, found on the new Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga. Audi’s SUV concept is a pretty large vehicle, having a length of 4.88 meters (16.0 ft) and a width of 1.93 meters (6.3 ft), with a height of 1.54 meters (5.1 ft).
Audi’s latest concept prides itself on having OLED displays in the interior and a touch-operated climate control unit. Just like in race cars, the steering wheel has a flat-bottomed design. Even the two separate rear seats feature a set of OLED-based displays in front of them, this time for the purpose of entertaining their passengers.
The technology featured in this vehicle doesn’t end at the interior, the new h-tron quattro concept being fitted with Audi’s piloted driving technology. The system used radar, along with several cameras and sensors to monitor its surroundings and provide a self-driving function. The first Audi production model to get this technology will be the next generation A8, which could be able to drive itself at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37.3 MPH).
The vehicle’s exterior shows a few shapes that it shares with the current Audi Q7, but the similarities end here. The car also has a new color, named “Citrine Yellow.” However, when compared to the e-tron crossover study, the latest SUV concept from Audi shows more common elements.
Since this is a technical study, the mechanical part of the car is more important than the design of the body. Audi’s h-tron quattro concept (written on purpose with small letters) has two electric motors. The one on the front axle delivers 121 HP, while the unit on the rear axle provides 188 HP. The hydrogen fuel cell concept can go from 0 to 62 MPH in less than seven seconds thanks to the combined peak torque of the two electric motors, that exceeds 550 Nm (406 lb-ft). For autonomy reasons, the top speed of the vehicle is limited by electronic means to 200 km/h (124 MPH).
The two electric engines are powered by a battery located under the passenger compartment. The unit only weighs 60 kg (132.3 lb) and can temporarily deliver up to 100 kW of power. The battery itself is recharged using a hydrogen fuel cell system, whose tank is refilled in around four minutes and provides a range of up to 600 kilometers (372.8 miles).
The latest SUV concept from Audi also has an adaptive pneumatic suspension, capable of lowering the car as the driving speed increases. The lowering process reduces the height with up to 30 millimeters (1.2 inches) for aerodynamic reasons. Audi’s drive select system allows the driver to operate the feature.
