Audi Expands Operations in Hungary

After back in 2009 the Hungarian operations of German manufacturer Audi have been severely struck by the economic crisis, things seem to have gotten back to normal, and even more. Audi announced today it plans a major expansion of its operations in the country, starting with the EUR900 million ($1.2 billion) to be invested there by 2013 and ending with the expansion of the local manufacturing facility.

The carmaker on a 200 hectares land in Gyor a facility which will be in charge with manufacturing the body shells for the Audi models assembled locally, which are currently being shipped from Ingolstadt. The facility will also include a paint shop and assembly lines.

“This expansion to create a complete automotive plant is a clear commitment to the Gyor production site,”
said Frank Dreves, Audi member of the board for Production.

“At the same time, this decision provides important advantages for the entire company. The hub concept allows us to compensate for temporary over- and under-capacities across locations.”

The goal is to have the Gyor facility manufacture 125,000 cars per year starting 2013, including the Audi TT Coupe, the TT Roadster, the A3 Cabriolet and an yet mysterious A3 derivative. According to the German carmaker, the addition of the new facility will support some 15,000 jobs in the region.

“We support Audi’s policies which are oriented on growth and employment. Not a single job in Germany is threatened by the expansion,”
added Peter Mosch , Audi General Works Council chairman.

“This has been ensured until 2014 by the employment guarantee agreed by employee representatives and the Board of Management.”
