Audi e-tron Urban Concept Teased on Video

We would've expected from the Dutch to say a 1+1 concept previews the car of the future, but never from the serious Germans. Yet Audi did just that yesterday by showing us their ultra-lightweight urban vehicle that’s going to be revealed at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show in September. The sketches revealed yesterday didn’t do it for us, so let’s hope the first video, a teaser, might sway us toward believing the 1+1 configuration is the way to go. It's clear this is a light car designed for congested urban spaces. The cockpit consists of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats. The shots were taken at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin Germany in order to show how such a vehicle can be integrated into the landscape. It looks like the sketches actually came from the initial design phases of the project, as they show a car that’s much lower down and more elegant than what’s in the video. Power goes from a couple of e-tron electric motors to a set of massive 21-inch diameter wheels. We still don’t know if the sliding canopy that opens up to allow the driver and one passenger to enter the car is a production feature or not. “The highly concentrated look of the technical study, with its forward-urging lines, is dynamic and emotional – it lends Audi’s design language a completely new impetus. The Audi urban concept is not based on any previous model – its development is solely oriented on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of sporty motion,” Audi stated in the official press release. autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
