Audi e-tron to Be Built by quattro

The pieces which will form in the near future Audi's first electric vehicle are slowly falling into place, as the German carmaker announced it has decided on a site to be in charge of e-tron production: Neckarsulm.

The Neckarsulm site is home of Audi's quattro division, the birth place of the R8. The experience the people working here have with small series production and high-performance sports cars was the reason behind the decision.

"Audi’s choice of the Neckarsulm site to build the e-tron reiterates that the site will continue to play an important role in the future,” Rupert Stadler, Audi chairman of the board said in a statement.

The first batches of Audi's electric super car will be released in late 2012. Speculated to be called R4, the car to turn production version is based on the first of the three e-tron models shown by Audi so far, the one unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Auto Show.

The car is powered by four electric motors, two at the front and two at the rear axle, in the truest quattro style. Together, they generate an amazing 313 hp troop, as well as 4,500 Nm of torque, propelling the car to 100 km/h in only 4.8 and to a top speed of 200 km/h (124.27 mph). The 53 kilowatt hours battery block give it a range of 248 kilometers (154 miles), after which they can be recharged from a usual household plug, for in between 6 and 8 hours.

“Just as the name quattro has become synonymous with all-wheel drive, e-tron will become the Audi brand name for electric mobility,” Stadler added.
