If you like small cars with downsized turbo petrol engines, we have good news for you. Audi has just given its smallest car a makeover and we are pleased to report that the A1 and A1 Sportback are now available with a Ford Ecoboost rivaling 1-liter turbo engine and premium German features.
The unit is marketed as the 1.0 TFSI ultra and once you buy in, expect 95 hp. This is the first Audi A1 model to be fitted with the new 1-liter turbo engine that's also being made available on the VW Polo facelift and new Skoda Fabia. It's the base unit and unlike on the Polo, it directly replaces the 1.2 TFSI with 90 hp. Audi has deemed its customers can afford paying for extra tech and receive more fuel-sipping tech under the newly established "ultra" badge. The engine delivers a combined fuel consumption of just 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers (54.7 US mpg), equivalent to 99 grams per km of CO2.
Couple that with 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque and you get a frugal A1 that takes just over 10 seconds to reach 100 km/h and has a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph).
Below, you can check out a video that details how the A1 TFSI ultra's powertrain works and after that, make sure to check out the photo gallery. To make the idea of a 3-cylinder Audi more appealing, the Germans have added the sexy S line body kit, 17-inch alloys and Xenon plus headlights, but you have to pay extra for all of these.
The funny thing is that you can't order this engine yet, or the cool Hainan Blue paint on the A1 facelift. You can order the red car in our photos, which is a Misano Red 5-door with the black trim package. We're guessing that car is powered by the 150 hp 1.4-liter turbo. But the point there is to check out the black wheel inserts, the cream leather bucket seats or the Bose sound system and color yourself impressed.
