The all-new M550d hasn't hit the market yet, but it has been revealed and should be even better than its predecessor thanks to a quad-turbo 3-liter engine with 400 HP. Yet Audi is also considering a couple of sport diesel-powered executives of its own, the next-generation S6 and S7 models.
The TFSI versions of the S6 and S7 are well on their way and have been spotted on numerous occasions at the Nurburgring. The sound suggests they will be powered by the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 found under the hood of the new RS4 or Porsche Cayenne S.

That's bad news if you were hoping for a cheap German V8 sedan. So, are the TDI-powered versions good news? Surely, Audi will fit the monster 4.0 TDI from the SQ7 under the hood. Well, according to Motor1 France, they won't.

Instead, the performance diesel models will be powered by a 3.0 TDI. The twin-turbo unit producing 326 HP in the outgoing A6 and A7 Competition is mentioned.

On paper, that's a bad solution, as the M550d would sound cooler and probably be a lot faster. Audi already spent all that money making the V8 with its electric supercharger, so why not offer it on more model? Well, Audi has always tried to stop its cars from cannibalizing each other's sales.

If you could get a 435 horsepower S6 TDI that gets 7 l/100km, why would you ever consider a 450 HP TFSI model with a V6?

While the twin-turbo TDI engine might get a little more power, maybe as much as 340 HP, we don't see any reason for Audi to develop a tri- or a quad-turbo version like BMW has. Porsche co-developed most of the V6 and V8 engines that Audi uses, and it says diesel will be discontinued in the foreseeable future.

But what do you guys think? Shouldn't Audi just forget about the overlap and just give us the V8 TDI in the S6 and S7?
