With the ride-sharing industry expected to grow exponentially over the following years, carmakers who already conduct business in this segment are stepping up efforts to remain on top of the wave.
Volkswagen as a group plans to launch an integrated mobility service in the following decade. By 2025, VW’s company called Moia is intended to become one of the world’s leading mobility service providers.

Somewhat testing part of the Moia operations of the coming years, Audi introduced in 2015 its on-demand service to several markets, including the U.S. and China.

As of this week, the service will be available in another location in Europe as well, more precisely in the UK. The cities selected for the roll-out of the service are Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

This week's announcement marks the beginning of the expansion of Audi’s on demand in the UK. By the end of the year, the German carmaker plans to launch on demand in Newcastle and Birmingham, followed by London.

The service allows customers to reserve cars online for between one hour and 28 days. The all-in rate includes a full-service package with unlimited mileage, fully comprehensive insurance, and Roadside Assistance.

Unlike traditional car sharing services the likes of rival Daimler's car2go, on demand makes use of Audi or partner employees to deliver and pick up cars. It’s a bit more complicated than Daimler’s approach, but it appears to be working for Audi, as it already operates the service in six other cities across the world.

on demand has an option for the cars booked online to be delivered to the customer’s chosen location by a concierge. This person will personally walk the customer through the vehicle features and controls.

The other method involves going to an Audi dealer and picking the car up. When the reservation period is over, a concierge will come and pick the car up from wherever the customer wants it picked up.
