Audi Brings e-tron to the A3

Electrification spells e-tron for German manufacturer Audi, and it's only natural for a car maker that has embraced this type of propulsion means to expand the reach of “electric” into more of its models.

Just as previewed a week ago, Audi confirmed on Tuesday that it will be presenting in Shanghai, at the local auto show which opens its doors this week, a new e-tron concept, this time wrapped in the body of an A3 model (only that, this time, a body that does not come as the hatchback that has made the range famous).

This would be the fourth e-tron version presented by Audi since it decided that EVs would be part of the future. Built as a four-seat notchback sedan, the concept uses a system designed to work as a plug-in hybrid.

This system comprises a very powerful 1.4 TFSI four-cylinder engine with turbocharging and gasoline direct injection (211 hp) and an electric motor with an output of 27 hp. Combined, the two are enough to propel the model from naught to sixty two in 6.8 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 231 km/h (143.54 mph). Controlling the power is a seven-speed S tronic with paddle shift.

Design wise, the A3 e-tron features both the elements that have made the brand recognizable, as well as design cues presented for the first time by Audi on the e-tron models.

The Germans said nothing about a possible production version of the model, although it's likely we'll see an interpretation of this concept on the streets in the near future. For the moment, the concept to be shown at the Chinese show comes in the form of a technical study.
