Audi Begins Second Phase of Neckarsulm Expansion

In what is the second announcement concerning some investments to be made by German manufacturer Audi, after the one which announced the expansion of the carmaker's operations in Hungary, Audi has let the world know today that it began the second phase of construction at the planned expansion of the Neckarsulm engine testing center.

This second phase, which will transform the center in what is expected to be the most capable technical facility in the field of engine testing of any carmaker, will cost Audi no less than EUR90 million ($120 million). In addition, Audi will also partner with various universities in order to intensify the research in the field of engine development.

The goal of all these endeavors is as simple as it is predictable: create more fuel efficient engines, without compromising the overall power output. The center will work not only for Audi, but for all the brands of the Volkswagen group.

The work on the expanded facility is expected to conclude in 2012. At that time, the center will be capable of performing some 1,600 engine tests each year, in the fields of mechanics, electrical, electronics.

“With its expertise in lightweight construction and in highly efficient TFSI and TDI engines, the Neckarsulm site is taking on a key role within the Volkswagen Group,” said Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen Group chairman of the board.

“We want to take on the leading role in all important technologies. The new testing center will contribute significantly to this – and it can be used by all brands within the corporate group.” The expansion also confirms once again that Audi is key to success in the premium segment.”
