Since as long as we can remember, Audi models in China had weird names like A4L 45 TFSI quattro. Now buyers from across the world are going to have to put up with it because two numbers on the trunk will define what kind of engine you have.
Basically, the numbers are representative of the power outputs expressed in kilowatts, followed by the type of engine you have - TFSI, TDI, e-tron, and g-tron. So does that mean a 100 kW gasoline engine will be called 100 TFSI? No, that would have been too simple.

According to Audi, the numbers start at 30 and increase by five based on certain kilowatts brackets. For example, the numeral combination “30” will appear on the rear of all models with power output between 81 and 96 kW (110 and 130 metric horsepower). Meanwhile, 45 means you have between 169 and 185 kW (230 and 252 HP).

The bigger the number, the bigger the boss you're supposed to be

According to the press release, the hierarchy stops with "70" in which case you have a performance car of over 400 kW (544 HP). However, it later goes on to say that S, RS and R8 models won't have the dual-number name. So we think the 70 will only apply to something like an A8 W12 or the flagship versions of the upcoming EVs.

As alternative drive technologies become increasingly relevant, engine displacement as a performance attribute is becoming less important to our customers. The clarity and logic of structuring the designations according to power output makes it possible to distinguish between the various performance levels,” explains Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter, Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing.

Audi goes on to say that "the spectrum will range from the Audi Q2 30 TFSI with 85 kW to the Audi Q7 50 TDI with 200 kW." (116 HP and 272 HP). But that leaves us even more confused. What do you call an 82 HP Audi A1 or a 204 HP A3 e-tron?

The changes will be implemented this fall, starting with the all-new generation of the A8. Its redesignated mill will include the 3.0 TDI with 286 HP, which will be used by the A8 50 TDI, and the A8 55 TFSI with a 340 HP 3.0-liter turbo.
