Audi is feeling a little bit cocky right now. Dieselgate hasn't stopped them from reporting sales growth in February and a whole heap of new cars are scheduled to come out soon. "What's the point if they're not coming to America?" we hear you say. Except they are, or the A5 Sportback is.
America has never seen this odd-looking four-door coupe. It's so outlandish that the media is calling it a rival for the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, even though it looks more like the 4 Series Gran Coupe. But we digress; the point is that the A5 Sportback will land in America during the second quarter of 2017.
"I feel confident that there will be another variant of the A5 that will be a real home run," Audi of America President Scott Keogh told Automotive News on the sidelines of an A4 media event. "There’s one we don’t have."
There are only three body styles available for the A5, so mister Keogh knew very well he was confirming the 4-door coupe. Of course, he didn't say anything about the engines available, but it most certainly won't be a TDI "Clean" Diesel. Instead, we are looking to see the same 2-liter turbo fitted to the A4 with quattro as standard.
It's not even being delayed by much, as the A5 coupe, convertible and 4-door have not yet been revealed. According to our data, all of them will come out by the start of summer and should enter production in the last quarter of the year.
The S5 Sportback will be shown at the same time as the A5 version. It's already undergoing testing and should have a single-turbo 3-liter engine delivering its 350+ horsepower.
But the whole point of bringing the A5 Sportback to America is to have the right platform for a 4-door RS model, since the RS4 can't be sold and the 2-door models are impractical. We expect the RS5 to rival the C63 AMG and the BMW M3 in 2018. It should come with a twin-turbo V6 engine of unknown displacement and around 450 to 500 horsepower.
