The automakers have really run out of niches. Crossovers, coupes, electric cars... electric crossover coupes - they've pretty much done it all. Some of them have figured out that it's just best to make more of what they do best, which is probably why Mercedes has so many roadsters.
Audi, on the other hand, has its expertise in the field of wagons, or as it calls them, "Avants." That's probably why the new Q7 looks less like a bulbous Range Rover and more like a tall wagon.

We're willing to bet our auto repair money that sooner or later either the A5 or the A7 will have an Avant version. Both already have the added practicality of the liftback design. But a larger trunk never hurt anybody, plus the look is sexy as fudge. The company's head of design even played with the idea, launching the Prologue Avant over a year ago.

Only a day after the reveal of the all-new A5/S5 Sportback 4-door coupe, we now have a rendering of the A5 Avant. It's about as inevitable as turbocharging conquering the world.

We think that X-TOMI used part of the roof from the A4 to make it happen, which makes us wonder if Audi takes studio shots from the same angle all the time.

We're not particularly blown away by what we see. It's too much like a regular wagon and has lost most of the coupe's appeal. It also doesn't help that the exhaust system is to the side of the car, making it appear ordinary. What we want is the Mercedes CLS with Audi badges.

Audi might be forced to design something original by necessity. Not only does BMW have the competitive 4 Series Gran Coupe, but Volkswagen will launch a successor to the CC soon. It will be really big, both regarding cabin space and the trunk, which will also have a liftback design.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
