Audi A4 Returns to the BTCC

The Audi badge will make its comeback to the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) next year, as the British team Rob Austin Racing will enter a pair of A4s in the series.

The team, which has previously taken part in the Ginetta Challenge (G20 and G50 Cups) and in the 2208 British GT Championship (GT4 class), has asked GPR Motorsport to build two A4s following the Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) rules. The regulations, which will be introduced in 2011, are aimed at cutting costs but keeping the vehicles at the same level of performance as the current ones.

This is a great step for us and a fantastic challenge. We are convinced that the NGTC concept is going to make the BTCC even more competitive and exciting and that the Audi will be a race winner,” said Rob Austin, the teams’s boss, who is also a successful racer.

We are pleased that Rob has made the decision to join the BTCC. We are delighted to be building the cars and are sure that they will be competitive from the outset,” added Gary Blackham of GPR Motorsport.

The team has also released the adjacent rendering, in order to offer us an idea of how its future racers will look like. Rob Austin is currently negotiating with drivers and sponsors and hopes that all the necessary steps will be completed in time for a confirmation at the Autosport Show, which will be held in January 2011.

Audi managed to take the BTCC title in 1996, with Frank Biela driving an A4. The automotive producer was last seen in the series in 1998.
