The company will spend around €150 million ($200 million) to build its new plant and join rival German carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz on the Brazilian market.

"The luxury market is still small but will grow fast thanks to social changes under way in Brazil. We are confident in regard to Brazil's development. By producing in Brazil, we will create the basis for further growth in the region,” said Audi CEO Rupert Stadler after a meeting with Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

In addition to Brazil, Audi will also open a new automobile plant in Mexico as well, as part of the company’s plan for “further growth worldwide and in particular on the South American continent”.
