Henry Ford believed everybody needed one type of car, but the Germans automakers seem convinced everybody wants a different car and are each offering tens of different engine configurations, body styles and platforms.
The Audi A3 was originally designed only as a compact hatchback, but it's not only grown into a much bigger car, it also gained Sportback and Sedan bodies.

That's still not enough variety for Audi, as the Germans are thinking about an A3-based MPV, which will debut next year as a concept. We still don't know what the model will be called, but we don't think they'll stray from their naming system, meaning it will likely be an "Avant" model.

Theophilus Chin has just released a rendering of what he thinks that car might be like. A more upright body style provides occupants with a taller cabin, while an extra 20cm added to the Sportback's body increases both legroom and boot space. The shape of the trunk is justifiably very simple in order to maximize practicality, reduce the lip and widen the opening.

Of course, most people buying the A3 Avant would want a practical engine like the 1.2 TSI or the 1.6 TSI, but we're not practical and would much rather have it in S3 flavor with 300 hp.
