Audi A3 Gets 1.6l TDI Engines

With fuel efficiency being the talk of the day – alongside GM's bankruptcy, but that's another story – German manufacturer Audi announced today it will give it's A3 range some new 1.6l TDI engines beginning this month.

The units come in two different power outputs, giving customers a choice between a 105 hp output and a 90 hp troop. The first, in conjunction with the TDI's common rail high-pressure injection technology, provides a fuel consumption rate of 4.1l/100 km (57.4 mpg) and emits 109g of CO2 every kilometer. This version makes the A3 reach 100 km/h in 11.4 seconds and powers it up to a top speed of 194 km/h (121 mph).

The 90 hp engine is a bit more hungry, eating 4.5l/100 km (52.3 mpg) and releasing into the air 118g/km. Performance is just under its bigger brother's, with naught to 100 km/h acceleration in 12.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph).

These consumption figures are made possible thanks to a number of fuel saving technologies used in the A3. The smaller capacity engines provide a decent amount of power thanks to the turbochargers, while systems such as the energy-recovery ones help keep the fuel gauge indicating "full" longer.

As for the prices, the A3 equipped with the 90 hp engine starts at 22,550 euros, while the more powerful version comes with a price of 23,550 euros. The engines are available for the A3 Sportback as well, prices for this model being 900 euros more than the aforementioned versions. As we said, all these versions will be available in Europe starting this month.
