Audi has just unveiled the first-ever ultra production car, a version of the new A3 that promises amazing fuel economy.
Just like the sister car from Volkswagen, the Golf BlueMotion, the A3 ultra uses a 1.6-liter TDI diesel engine rated at 110 PS (81 kW). Thanks to a number of improvements, the compact fuel-sipper is capable of a fuel consumption of just 3.2 liters per 100 kilometers, equivalent to 73.50 mpg US. On full 50 liter tank, Audi says you can expect to travel in excess of 1,500 kilometers (932.06). CO2 emissions have also fallen drastically to 85 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer.
Just like the Golf, the TDI engine is only part of the equation. A number of different changes have been made to ensure the car is efficient. The car is made as light as possible and has been lowered by 15mm compared to the regular A3 to optimize air flow. 205/55 R16 tires with optimized rolling resistance as well as a longer final drive ratio further improve the efficiency of the A3 1.6 TDI ultra.
Despite being optimized for efficiency, the A3 fuel sipper is not slow. With a 0 to 100 km/h time of 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph), it's basically just as good as the a regular 1.6 TDI.
The A3 1.6 TDI ultra is already on sale in Germany in 3-door and Sportback configuration with deliveries to take place in September. Prices there will start at €25,200.
