Audi A3 1.6 TDI, 1.4 TFSI S Tronic Get Start/Stop

German manufacturer Audi announced today it has decided to combine the S Tronic dual-clutch transmission fitted on two of the A3 models with a start/stop system, to give both the 1.6 TDI and 1.4 TFSI an extra edge when it comes to fuel consumption.

Therefore, the two A3s now post improved mileages. The diesel unit now eats up to 4.2l/100 km (56 mpg) and emits 109g of CO2/km, while the petrol version achieves 5.3l/100 km (44.3 mpg) and emits 124g of CO2/km.

The A3 1.6 TDI, powered by a four-cylinder engine, still packs a punch, despite the eco-approach. It develops 105 hp at 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque in between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Mated to the S Tronic transmission, the diesel A3 does 60 in 11.7 seconds and tops at 194 km/h (120 mph).

For the petrol A3, the 1.4l TFSI engine delivers 125 hp and a maximum torque of 200 Nm in between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. Also paired with the S Tronic transmission, the A3 achieves naught to sixty acceleration in 9.3 seconds and tops at 203 km/h (126 mph).

Alongside with the start/stop system, the two new A3s will also feature an energy-recovery system. While braking or coasting, the system controls the alternator to recover energy, which is temporarily stored in the battery. During acceleration, in releases the energy back into the electrical system, reducing the load on the alternator and eventually saving fuel.

The two new A3s will be offered for both the three-door and Sportback versions starting November. The price remains unchanged for the 1.4l TFSI (23,700 euros/ 24,600 Sportback). The diesel on the other hand will be priced at 25,000 euros for the three-door version and at 26,400 euros for the Sportback.
