The A2 was never a success for Audi, with the German carmaker only managing to sell 175,000 units of the aluminum-bodied car. However, Ingolstadt is now preparing a new generation of the car, which is expected to arrive in 2015.
The vehicle will ride on the VW Group’s new MQB platform, but will inherit the aluminum body concept from its predecessor. The vehicle will be a rival for BMW’s upcoming i carbon fiber city car and will try to underprice it.
The power will come from hybrid units, as well as from electric ones, while in the transmission department we’ll get a double-clutch unit. These won’t have to be very powerful, as the vehicle will be a lightweight one. To achieve, this, Audi will go past the aluminum body, using composite materials for certain panels.
Audi was supposed to release the new A2 sooner, but the company brags that the postponing was due to the fact that the vehicle will represent a revolution in its segment.
