Audi A2 Mk. II New Details

Audi A2 conceptAudi A2 concept
Initially, Audi was planing to relaunch the A2 having only an electric version called the e-tron (in 2013). The car  would be powered by a 60 hp electric engine that draws electricity from its lithium-ion battery, giving it a range of at least 100 km (62 miles) on a full charge. Audi has however revealed the fact that the new A2 will also be offered with traditional engines. First among them are the new 1.0-liter FSI with 60 hp (44,74 kW) and the 1.0-liter TFSI developing 75 hp (55.9 kW), both using a three cylinder block. A 1.2-liter TDI ‘oil burner’ will also be added to the range and will develop 75 hp, along with a still undefined hybrid powerplant.

The platform for the future Audi A2, called NSF, will be shared with the new Volkswagen Lupo. Steel will replace aluminum in order to lower the costs. Only the overall body shape and design cues will come from the old A2, as the new model is planned to be a five-door MPV, approximately 370 centimeters (149 inches) long and with a 1000 liter boot capacity (with the rear seats down).

The original A2 was an unpopular car, as drivers never liked its narrow and tall design. Its bespoke aluminum chassis also made it too expensive to compete against other small cars at the time. With this generation, VW’s Chairman Martin Winterkorn promises a low-cost, competitive car for the world market.

Two more models are expected to come from Seat and Skoda, while Audi plan to also make a minivan variant that will be taller and longer. The one we really want to see is the 313 hp model with four wheel drive and sporty exhaust.
