Audi’s A2 was a car that many consider as being ahead of its time. Unfortunately, its styling did not help it gather more customers, and its price did not help one bit.
Many years after the first generation of the Audi A2 ended its production cycle, the brand launched the A1, its smallest car yet. With that in mind, they also created a concept to show how the A2 of the future could look, and the show car exhibited in 2011 was claimed to be close to production. Unfortunately, things did not pan out for the unique Audi, and the A2 project was discarded again.
Since that moment, Audi’s main competitors have achieved impressive sales figures in the compact MPV segment, which has experimented with the silhouette that was so unloved for the first A2. With the European market seemingly ready for practical premium cars that are not SUVs or wagons, Audi is reconsidering the launch of an A2.
This time, the A2 would be placed in the compact segment, and its role in the Audi range would be to complete the A3 portfolio. Just like the A3, the next-generation A2 would be built on the MQB platform. Instead of a conventional hatchback, SUV, or sedan, Audi could apply the MPV (minivan) recipe for the A2, which should bring the last piece of the C-segment puzzle of Audi’s lineup.
With no prototypes seen on the road, and no recently unveiled concept vehicles in sight, it will take awhile until Audi readies the next A2. Every moment that passes until that happens, Audi’s rivals at BMW and Mercedes-Benz will sell their compact MPVs, which have grabbed a generous cut of that market segment.
The most likely launch date for the next-generation Audi A2 would be around the year 2020. The release date mentioned above would only be possible if the A2 will get the approval of the company’s leaders, which is not an easy thing these days because of the cost savings that are planned for the entire Volkswagen Group.
