Audi A1 e-tron to Buzz in Geneva

That's it, ladies and gents, a new brand is born. Together with the announcement of the Audi A1 based e-tron, German carmaker Audi announced e-tron is the badge of choice for the future electric vehicles sourced from Ingolstadt.

The Audi A1 e-tron is already the third vehicle in the range coming from Audi in the last six months, after the e-tron concept presented in Frankfurt and the second e-tron shown in Detroit, at NAIAS.

According to the carmaker, this new vehicle is a Mega City Vehicle (if it sounds familiar, it's because that's exactly how BMW calls its future line of electric and very fuel efficient vehicles) and will be unveiled this week at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. It comes with a range of 50 kilometers (31 miles) in city traffic and provides 75 kW (102 hp) of power.

This somewhat limited range is being extended with the help of a single-rotor Wankel engine and an electrical generator with a charge rating of up to 15 kW. It gives the A1 an additional 200 km of range, with a fuel consumption rated at 1.9l/ 100 km (123.8 US mpg) and emission at 45g of CO2/km.

“The strength of the electric car clearly lies in the urban mobility area, where the demand for emission-free local transportation will strongly increase,” Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development for Audi said in a statement.

The carmaker, however, has not released any official photos of the vehicle yet.

autoevolution will be attending the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
