Selling superminis is a tricky business. European customers expect quite a few standard features, especially when prices start at about €10,000. Some models offer better build quality, others focus on economy and some have practicality on their side.
Volkswagen group has a quartet of them right now, all built on the same platform and targeting slightly different audiences. The first, launched in 2007, while the A1 is the last all-new model, launched in 2010. One focuses on being the most practical, while the other tries to be the must luxurious.
But what if you could combine both into one and create a wagon variant of the A1. Last year, the Germans introduced the A1 Sportback but with only 270 liters of boot volume, it fails to match the Fabia’s class-leading capacity.
An Audi A1 Avant sounds like such a niche model that we have to ask ourselves if it’s worth it. But given the popularity all Audis are enjoying right now, it’s hard to see why not. Certainly, this rendered version of the mini station wagon is a good looking as anything else in the class, and it has to be, given the high asking price of any four-ringed car.
